Punch’s Golden Age « Enfilade →
While aged cocktails might be too late for new year parties, punch certainly is not.   Enfilade picks up on a book about the history of punch which was recently covered by a story on NPR.  You can click through to the NPR story and also find out a little bit more about the book which contains several recipes too.

Aged Cocktails Gain in Popularity - NYTimes.com →
A little too late for new year parties, but well worth trying at another party (Valentine’s bash with aged cocktails all around?). Also mentioned in this article is Jeffrey Morgenthaler’s blog which is well worth visiting.

A Surgically Implanted Camera And More At New Arab... →
There is a bit of a trend starting in which non-Western countries start establishing their own museums to house their own home-grown collections. For example, New Dehli may be building a modern art museum.  Hopefully these countries will raise their own notable art historians too to curate these museums and write monographs.

Hmmm… Personally, I think that crowdsourcing transcription is a great idea despite the problem of transcriptionists not having adequate background knowledge.

Not really crazy about all the lists people make at the end of the year.  it would be nice to read a film review rather than yet another lame best of 2010 list.  That reminds me, what is it with film critics and lists?  Listing fetish, anyone?

Total Lunar Eclipse Tonight- You should Check it...
There’s a total lunar eclipse tonight- the full moon is going to turn a beautiful dark red color.  The last time there was a total lunar eclipse on the winter solstice was in 1638.  While the famous astronomer Galileo Galilei would have been alive to see it, he went blind earlier in the year. If you are in North America (where it will be most visible), the optimal time to see it is 3:15am...

Recently, I’ve been reading the Vintage Book of Latin American Stories.  I’m somewhere in the middle of the collection right now, and I thought I would share some thoughts on one particularly good story called “Bukhra Nocturne” by Mexican author Sergio Pitol. The story reads much like good travel literature in that it takes the reader on a very physical journey by pulling...

short interview with Black Eyed Peas band member Will.I.Am on writing songs.  This guy really knows how to build a good hook and while this interview does not really give away the magic, it gives us a glimpse on his process which is kind of cool.

Wow.  If a major gallery (also sponsored by a government) is calling for withdrawl- this thing is getting really ugly.   I have to say, I am really disappointed with the amount of attacks which are being leveled at the Smithsonian and the curators.  Why aren’t people vehemently attacking Donahue of the Catholic League, and representatives Eric Cantor and John Boehner?

A write-up on an interesting new project in New Zealand which has staff working together and using a blog to create a more enriching museum experience both for visitors and for themselves.  Hooray! This is from a site called Museum 2.0 which is worth checking out.  So you should check it out- right now.  Seriously, stop reading this post and check it out.

CultureGrrl gives us a pretty good writeup of the NYPL’s discussion with the curators of the Hide/Seek exhibition. There are many other posts on this blog concerning the Hide/Seek controversy- so if reading up on it is your cup of tea, or if you don’t know what’s going on, be sure to click through to the rest of the blog.

BBC News - Colombia army gives Farc rebels early... →
I like that the army is trying to send the Farc a message that Christmas is a good time to disarm by using Christmas trees which are snuck into the jungle.  There’s just something really cool and really subversive about that.  Way to think out of the box.

I was thinking about the new Spiderman musical, specifically in terms of costs and ticket prices.   The show has, according to news reports, cost $65 million dollars to develop.  The show costs one million dollars per week to operate.  The theatre’s capacity is approximately 1,900 people.   Given these numbers, each ticket would have to be at least $66 just to pay weekly operating costs....
